Chapter 6Proactive Solutions: Staying Ahead of the Curve
The evidence is clear about this one fact: deepfakes change what we believe and redefine reality itself. We've seen millions stolen, blackmail executed, and legal systems compromised, but these are only previews of what's to come. The question now isn't whether deepfakes will deceive us. They already have. The real question is, what can we do to fight back and protect our sense of trust?
Not all deepfake scams succeed. The only difference between those who fall for them and those who do not is whether someone takes the extra step to verify the truth in real time.
Jennifer DeStefano was almost one of the victims. In early 2023, she answered a phone call from an unknown number while standing outside a music studio. On the other end, her 15‐year‐old daughter, Briana, was sobbing and crying for help. “Mom, help me! These bad men have me,” the voice pleaded. It captured every nuance, inflection, and emotional detail that only a mother would recognize.
Then a man's voice took over the call. He demanded a ransom, threatening to harm Briana and take her to Mexico if Jennifer did not comply. The panic was immediate. Jennifer was convinced her daughter had been kidnapped. But before she could comply with the demand, a friend standing nearby urged her to call her husband to verify Briana's whereabouts. With shaking hands, she made the call, and within moments, her husband confirmed that Briana was safe at home, completely unaware ...
