In the not‐so‐distant past, the phrase “seeing is believing” was considered an unshakable truth. If something appeared on a screen, whether it was a photograph, a video, or a live broadcast, it was accepted as evidence. Visual and auditory cues carried an almost sacred credibility, forming the foundation of trust in our digital world. But that foundation has been shaken to its core. Deepfakes (a portmanteau of “deep learning” and “fake”) are images, videos, or audio that have been edited or generated using artificial intelligence, AI‐based tools, or AV editing software. They may depict real or fictional people and are considered a form of synthetic media, which is media usually created by artificial intelligence systems by combining various media elements into a new media artifact.
Deepfake technology, powered by AI, represents a seismic shift in how we create, perceive, and interact with media.
