Chapter 2Designing Secure Decentralized Applications
Good security is good engineering – built in from the start, not bolted on at the end.

2.1 Introduction
Decentralized blockchain applications have advanced significantly in security, thanks to contributions from highly regulated sectors such as finance, healthcare, and government, as well as from innovative blockchain start-ups. This chapter explores the critical aspects of designing secure blockchain applications by covering security architecture principles and best practices in security engineering. In industries with stringent regulatory requirements, blockchain solutions must be designed, implemented, and rigorously tested to ensure robust security controls that comply with technology standards and control policies.
By definition, decentralized applications, commonly known as dApps, are software applications that operate on decentralized networks, such as blockchain platforms. dApps leverage the decentralized blockchain to distribute application logic and data across a network of nodes that participate in the blockchain network. Like in the general case of blockchain-based applications, a dApp is interacting with the blockchain platform that integrates with each node of the blockchain platform to maintain a local copy of the distributed ledger ensuring each node has the transparency, immutability, and security of the recorded peer-to-peer (P2P) asset for value exchange transactions. Like in a traditional ...
