The F1 year aims to provide experience in a broad

range of settings prior to full GMC registration.

Regular work-based assessments take place, and

trainees must maintain a national learning portfolio

in order to progress.

The F2 year usually consists of four varied three-

month placements giving trainees the opportunity to

try a number of different specialities before making a

decision about which specialty training programme
