There’s wisdom in history. Hickey and his collaborators were able to create a thoughtful, well-reasoned language because they knew this history and could apply its wisdom.

In our industry, we don’t focus much on our roots and core principles outside of formal education in mathematics or computer science. We focus on the practical, and often that’s what we need. However, our collective history is interesting and informative. By understanding the research and sometimes heated debate, our thinking about what we do gains depth.
