Attribute value data types

As mentioned earlier, each DynamoDB attribute consists of an attribute name and an attribute value. The attribute value in turn consists of two pieces: the value's data type name, and the value data. In this section, we'll focus on the data types.

There are three main data types categories:

• Scalar Types: This is the simplest data type; it represents a single value. The scalar type category encompasses the following data type names:
  • S: This is simply a string type; it utilizes the UTF-8 encoding; the length of the string must be between zero and 400 KB.
  • N: This is a number type. They can be positive, negative, or simply zero. They can go up to 38 digits precision.
