A third type of systems approach is primarily concerned with structural complexity. Structural complexity stems from the arrangement of and dynamic interrelationships between the many elements that make up a complicated system. The nature and quantity of the interactions makes it difficult to understand the system's behavior. Systems thinking can help by identifying the significant variables and interactions that impact what happens and then modeling these interactions, on the basis of positive and negative feedback loops and lags, in order to grasp the underlying causes of system behavior.
