Coast Guard Intelligence Unit had a model of the
commercial version of the machine together with
the original manufacturer’s instructions and sug-
gestions for its use. These instructions included the
practice of using “X” as a word separator, and of
representing numbers by their equivalent letters as
shown on the keyboard of the machine:
