Appendix IEquation Plotting Using Excel
I.1 General
The use of Excel for calculating and plotting hyperbolic and sinusoidal functions requires that the variables be expressed in radians. The approach taken in this work, namely calculation first using generic time before conversion to real time, lends itself well to using Excel because generic time, being related to frequency, is expressed in radians. Where the original equation is in real time, however, an initial conversion to radians is necessary. In the following, a range of calculations and plots will illustrate the methodology.
I.2 Underdamped Series RLC Circuit
The pu voltage equation for an underdamped series RLC circuit with a precharged capacitor is

and taking ds = 0.2 v becomes
The plotting of this equation is shown in steps in Figure I.1a–d.
