Effective Bandwidth

Abstract

It appears that allowing traffic to be subject to a small but non-zero probability of being lost, system efficiency can be greatly improved. This effect is referred to as statistical multiplexing. Statistics in such a regime, referred to as large deviations theory, lead to the concept of effective bandwidth.

A mixture of voice, video, and data traffic, is used as representative making up a traffic stream. Such services are modeled by a basic on-off model and a Markov additive process (MAP), respectively.

For some models, the effective bandwidths can be found by an analytical expression. In many situations, however, the effective bandwidth has to be determined by estimation from traffic data. Two estimation ...
