The first rule in business is know your customer. If you know what your customer wants, and you deliver it better than anyone else, you can be successful. Often, however, problems arise because systems must serve many kinds of customers who have conflicting requirements. Sometimes the customers do not know what they want, especially in an entirely new area. This chapter surveys some of the rough ground of Internet commerce: those areas in which the participants have different goals, needs, and priorities.
