Chapter 1, “The Deceiving Virtues of Technology,” was delivered as a plenary address at the 4th International Conference on Cognitive Technology: Instruments of Mind, University of Warwick, Coventry, U.K. (August 6-9, 2001)
Chapter 3, “Toward an Ecological Conversation,” was published as “A Conversation with Nature” in The New Atlantis no. 3 (Fall, 2003), pp. 34-46. It was also presented as a paper at a conference entitled “The Need for an Ignorance-based Worldview,” sponsored by the Land Institute in Matfield Green, Kansas, June 3-5, 2004.
Chapter 6, “On Forgetting to Wear Boots,” appeared in the Research Bulletin of the Research Institute for Waldorf Education, vol. 7, no. 2 (June, 2002), pp. 4-8.
Chapter 7, “Why Is the Moon Getting Farther Away,” was first published in Orion (spring, 1998), pp. 34-44. It also appeared in The Internet and Higher Education vol. 1, no. 2 (1998), pp. 139-46.
Chapter 8, “Failure to Connect,” appeared in an earlier version as part of “Computers, Brains, and Children,” Research Bulletin of the Research Institute for Waldorf Education, vol. 4, no. 1 (January, 1999), pp. 23-29.
