This chapter necessarily cannot go into tremendous detail on monitors and displays, because they change models and specs on a weekly basis. Rather, I cover a few tried-and-true favorites and “old reliables” in the name of giving a basic understanding of what to expect from current technology. For the purposes of digital cinematography, there are four basic types of displays with which to concern yourself.
The fundamental tools of shooting digitally are the waveform monitor and the vectorscope. Even in the most extreme “run and gun” shooting situations or under the worst budget pressure, do not consider sacrificing these essential tools.
