The best way to learn about documentary editing is to edit a documentary. Nothing substitutes for the trial-and-error process of putting a film together, especially if you have talented mentors who are willing to give constructive criticism. But you can also learn a great deal by watching finished films. By analyzing a documentary in depth, one can uncover its structural underpinnings and learn from the specific choices that it makes.
