The natural ambiguity of lines
The first thing a student needs to understand is that lines do not really exist in nature, yet lines and edges are primarily what designers rely on to sketch ideas. There are no lines in flowers or fruit or faces or fish, only outlines and edges, both of which change as the object or the viewer moves. The photograph of my daughter (Fig. 1) can be reduced to a series of curves and contours (re-traced in Adobe Illustrator) that define recognizable shapes such as eyes, lips, and ears.
