Steve Jobs calls it “the iPod economy”—the plethora of cases, gadgets, headphones, speakers, adapters, and other items available as accessories for your iPod. Whether or not it’s reasonable to compare iPod stuff to an economy, it is true that a growing number of companies are creating or customizing items just for iPod users. Some are fun and frivolous; some make using or carrying the iPod much easier. In this appendix, you take a look at several kinds of accessories and a few examples from each category. This is by no means a comprehensive guide, but you’ll get an idea of what’s available, and maybe which ones you need (as opposed to those you just want very badly).
