Elliptic curves over finite fields is a complicated subject. There are many possible routes one can take to understand pairings of points over elliptic curves. I think of this book as a path cut along the side of a mountain. It takes you to a nice lookout where you can see hundreds of other mountains to climb. Without getting to the lookout point, none of those other mountains are accessible, let alone visible. A few other paths will be pointed out with references, but the path to understanding pairings followed in this book is narrow.
