The work done by a force on a moving body is defined as the product of the force and the distance moved in the direction of the force.
Consider a particle of mass m which moves from a point A to a neighbouring point A′, as shown in Figure 11.1. If r be the position vector corresponding to point A, the small vector joining A to A′ may be denoted by the differential dr; the vector dr is called the displacement of particle.
