This chapter describes specific measures of software size used to estimate software development effort. These size measures reflect either “external” characteristics of the product or “internal” characteristics of the actual code. The size measures include stories, use cases, function points, and lines of source code. This chapter also covers sizing for reused code and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components. This is a long chapter because there are many measures of software size. Most readers will not be interested in every size measure described in this chapter.
