Alfred Rappaport is the Leonard Spacek Professor Emeritus at North-
western University’s J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management, where
he was a member of the faculty for twenty-eight years. His research
focuses on the application of shareholder value to corporate planning,
performance evaluation, and mergers and acquisitions. He is also
Shareholder Value Adviser to L.E.K. Consulting. His widely acclaimed,
pioneering book, Creating Shareholder Value: The New Standard for
Business Performance, was published in 1986. An updated edition, Cre-
ating Shareholder Value: A Guide for Managers and Investors, was pub-
