Although experimentation has played an important role in the development of the ideas in this book, I have also benefited from the experience, wisdom, and generosity of many people. The work began in 1992 when I walked into Eric von Hippel’s classroom at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). At the time, I was a doctoral student in electrical engineering and was curious about why there was an entire course dedicated to understanding the process of technological innovation.
