For many years, telecine machines were used simply for transferring finished film productions, usually prints, to videotape (or even live to air). Early telecines consisted simply of a television camera pointed at a film projector. Current models use either the flying spot system, or a charge-coupled device (CCD).

Modern telecines are geared towards transferring original negative to standard PAL or NTSC, or in some cases to high-definition TV. In addition to the basic colour correction supplied with the telecine, a powerful specialized colour corrector such as the Da Vinci Renaissance may be used.
