6.1 OpenGL
6.1.1 The Development of OpenGL
By the early 1990s, several manufacturers had produced minicomputer systems with processing speeds to support computer-aided design applications and visualisation. However, there were no common graphics standards for software or hardware, resulting in considerable duplication of effort to provide high-performance graphics for workstations. Silicon Graphics Inc. (SGI) had developed OpenGL for their workstations and in 1992 released the first version of OpenGL. One attraction of OpenGL was that it was platform-independent. Device drivers were provided by the various vendors for their workstations, so that programmers required no knowledge of the graphics hardware.
At the heart of OpenGL was the concept of matrix transformations of the vertices of lines and polygons and the provision of a viewpoint which could be positioned and orientated with several forms of projection. The style, width and colour of lines could be defined with polygons drawn in outline form or in-filled in colour or rendered as a texture. In addition, the provision of anti-aliasing significantly improved the quality of rendered images. 2D graphics was treated as a subset of 3D graphics. All these features of OpenGL were embedded in the drivers for specific computers, allowing the developer to focus on the graphical rendering of objects and scenes.
