There are two main goals to keep in mind when designing dashboards: they should be useful and beautiful.

Being useful seems obvious. A dashboard should contain relevant information that helps a person viewing it to understand the current state environment or system being monitored and (usually) what ways it’s changing over time. We need to have the right data and know its history to know what’s going on.
