Writing this book was inspired by recent events. As a retired Dean and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of the Lundquist College of Business at the University of Oregon, I have the good fortune of being invited periodically to teach in graduate and executive programs around the world and was scheduled to teach in Europe in April of this year. Accordingly, I had prepared—in the form of lecture notes and slide material—a complete, new course on global strategy. When the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic hit and the course was canceled, I decided to spend my time in self-isolation refining this material and writing this book.
