When You Need a Sponsor

The term sponsorship is now officially a buzzword. Aren’t mentors and sponsors the same thing? A word on the distinction: you want both, but it’s sponsors who make the difference in your career.

A mentor is wise and experienced, a good person to teach or guide you. He or she doesn’t have to know you personally. Often, mentors are assigned; with good intention, they meet you just once or twice! Most important, finding growth opportunities for you is not in a mentor’s job description. Mentors fulfill their responsibility when they pass on insight and advice based on their experience. They might tell everyone else the same stuff too. And they don’t, ever, need to stick out their necks for you.
