Let's take a look at the simple and advanced JQL editors in JIRA.
We have two projects, named First Project and Second Project, in our instance of JIRA. We want to run some queries against these projects. Go to the Issues and filters link in the left-hand column:

Our default screen for searching is basically the most generic query that we can do, and we're actually in the advanced editor. Let's flip over to the basic editor by clicking on the link in the upper right-hand corner of the screen:
