In recent years, a lot of IoT devices have been deployed with little thought given to security. As companies rush to push devices to market quickly, security too often doesn't even enter the equation. The situation has gotten so bad that there is now a common saying: "The S in IoT stands for security."

The security problem may be compounded by the fact that insecure IoT devices don't often expose the device developers to liability. For example, if you develop an insecure server, then your company is open to attack. However, if you develop an insecure IoT device, your company is fine; it's just your customers who are open to attack.
