So, who is the third party (the certificate authority) referred to in Figure 1-10 on page 17? In
order to ensure that the public key used in the SSL handshake actually belongs to the web
server, all modern browsers take advantage of what is called the Public Key Infrastructure
(PKI). The PKI uses a “web of trust” consisting of certificate authorities (CA) whose primary
function is to guarantee the authenticity of web servers’ identity.
