Chapter 6. Numbers and measurements

Present numerical information clearly and consistently so that the information is unambiguous and easy to assimilate. These guidelines will help you to express numerical information of all kinds, including measurements and their units, as well as currency, times, dates, and telephone numbers.

Expressing numbers

Follow these guidelines when your writing includes numbers:

• Use a period on the line (.), not a raised dot (·), as a decimal separator unless the comma (,) is a legal requirement in the particular country for which you are writing.

• Put a 0 in front of the decimal separator when the decimal value is less than 1.

Examples (incorrect)

The clearance is 4,6 cm (1,8 in.).
