Appendix H. z/Linux Considerations

This appendix discusses the structure benefits of z/Linux and the best practices with hardware configuration of z/Linux to support WebSphere, along with the scaling of z/Linux with respect to WebSphere workloads.

Structure and Benefits of z/Linux

z/Linux is a true Linux Operating System running on top of z/Series hardware. If configured properly, it provides the following benefits:

  • It inherits all of the z/Series hardware reliability, availability, and serviceability.

  • It can be much less costly on a Mip basis compared to z/OS (see IFLs below).

  • It can be configured to create many z/Linux images (virtual machines or guests) on a relatively small hardware footprint. These can be used in production mode if the peak utilizations ...
