It has been twenty years since relational database management systems began their transition from research projects and barely usable early product releases into today’s primary method of storing and accessing data in commercial applications. Tuning for those early systems consisted largely of choosing the amount of system resources to devote to them, allocating storage, and defining indexes. While this simplicity was often considered a strength, the inability to tune or optimize the application’s use of these systems limited their ability to be used in very demanding applications.
