6PCB Design for Wireless Devices
6.1 Introduction
In the field of wireless technology, the design and development of printed circuit boards (PCBs) play a crucial role in ensuring optimal performance and functionality of wireless devices. PCBs designed for wireless devices require specialized knowledge and techniques to address the unique challenges posed by high‐frequency signals, signal integrity, power distribution, and interference mitigation.
This chapter provides a comprehensive overview of the key considerations and best practices for designing PCBs specifically tailored for wireless applications. It covers various aspects of RF PCB design, including layer stack‐up assignment, component placement, grounding methods and techniques, power plane design, and bypassing and decoupling strategies. This chapter starts by exploring the fundamental aspects of RF PCB design. It discusses the assignment of layer stack‐up, considering factors such as the number and arrangement of PCB layers, in order to optimize signal integrity and provide better signal routing. Additionally, this chapter examines the strategic placement of components to minimize signal path lengths, reduce noise coupling, and enhance the Electromagnetic Interference/Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMI/EMC) performance of the RF circuit.
Grounding methods and techniques are then discussed, as they are crucial for maintaining signal integrity and mitigating interference. Grounding is essential in RF PCB design for ...
