13.0 Einleitung
Sockets bilden die Grundlage für fast alle Netzwerkprotokolle. JDBC, RMI, CORBA, EJB und die Nicht-Java-Protokolle RPC (Remote Procedure Call) und NFS (Network File System) werden alle durch die Verbindung verschiedener Arten von Sockets implementiert. Socket-Verbindungen können in fast jeder Sprache implementiert werden, nicht nur in Java: C, C++, Perl und Python sind ebenfalls beliebt, und viele andere sind möglich. Ein Client oder Server, der in einer dieser Sprachen geschrieben wurde, kann mit seinem Gegenüber in einer der anderen Sprachen kommunizieren.
