本書をお手に取るような読者は既にご存知の通り、
JavaScript
は厳密な関数型言語
ではありません。本書の原題は『
Functional JavaScript
』ですが、一般的に関数型と
思われているものに対して「
Functional
」という修飾語をわざわざ付与しないはず
です。したがって本書の趣旨は、普段なら行わないような関数型プログラミングを
JavaScript
を使って無理やり行うことである、とも捉えられます。なぜ関数型プログ
ラミングなのでしょうか？
その理由は本書の後半、

章に凝縮されています。関数に純粋性を持たせることに
よって関数のテスト性を高めること、不純なものを可能な限り隔離しておく（完全な
排除は不可能）ことによってシステム全体のテスト性を高めることを通じて、ソフト
ウェアにまとわりつく複雑さを最小限に抑えるための構築方法を考えることです。
関数型言語として
JavaScript
を理解し使用する（つまり、
JavaScript
の関数の特性
を最大限に活かしたプログラミングを行う）ことにより、コードがより洗練され、美
しく、そして読みやすいものになります。
この段階に至る前の本書前半では、上記を実現するために必要となる関数型プログ
