Putting the network under Siege

Siege is a web stress tester. Siege is a multi-threaded HTTP load testing and benchmarking utility. It was designed to let web developers measure the performance of their code under pressure. It allows you to hit a web server with a configurable number of concurrent simulated users.

It is those users who place the web server under siege. Performance measures include the following, which are quantified and reported at the end of each run:

  • Elapsed time
  • Total data transferred
  • Server response time
  • Transaction rate
  • Throughput
  • Concurrency
  • OK return count

Their meaning and significance are discussed later. Siege essentially has three modes of operation:
