Two basic types of formula (or math) environments are available in
: (1) a text mode in which math expressions are placed in a line of text, and (2) a display environment in which the math expression is place on a separate line.
text mode: To place a math expression in a line of text, simply enclose the math expression with $. . .$ or, equivalently, \(…\). In this mode, some symbols such as
and are written more compactly compared to their treatment in the “displaymath” mode.
