BY THE NUMBERS:
The wonderful thing about design is its diversity, its individuality. For every problem there are
an infinite number of solutions. In the face of such inestimable quantity, however, successful
design is nonetheless a qualitative experienceone in which context is as important as con-
tent, and for which concept trumps all. How then, does one go about assembling a collection
of design work, and presenting it in a way that is both meaningful and informative?
In compiling this book, we considered origin, intent, and authenticity as qualifying factors (in addition,
of course, to an underlying commitment to graphic excellence). We received more than 3,000
submissions, contributed from 38 U.S. states and 40 countries. Of these, some 300 are presented
here as representative of the best work being done in their respective localities. To better present
the solutions, they are collated based on their qualitative attributes, rather than being organized
simply by client type or industry. As you review this book, consider the work both individually
and collectively. Each entry is included for its own merit, but each spread and each section also
contains its own, secondary, narrative. We hope that it will inform, entertain, inspire, and enlighten.
