In this chapter we’ve looked at how to compile the Linux kernel and customize it to remove unneeded functionality for use as a dedicated routing machine.
We’ve also looked at some of the existing single-purpose Linux distributions developed for routing and networking, both commercial and non-commercial.
Configuring Linux for a router can be as simple as compiling the kernel. Companies looking to develop a commercial routing solution or a routing system for internal deployment can go so far as to create their own distribution using Linux and other Free Software.
