Uncanny valley effect

The term uncanny valley initially appeared in the context of robotics and described the feelings people experience from interacting with humanoid robots. Starting from 1970, Japanese and Korean companies have been producing androids, copying an appearance of a person up to the slightest detail. The androids usually were the copies of some visually attractive models. However, it was observed that such robots seem to cause rejection because they induce associations with corpses or mentally-impaired people. At the same time, robots that did not try to imitate a person's appearance evoked sympathy from observers.
