It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Benchmarking
When you are creating a model for solving a popular machine learning task, how do you know it is any better than anything else that has been invented by your predecessors? The answer is one word: benchmarks.
There are some well-known datasets that serve to compare accuracy across different models. For instance, for the task of large-scale visual object classification, a benchmark is the ImageNet dataset.
