So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
CHAPTER 6Neal Stephenson Enters the Metaverse—Lamina1, Blockchain, and the Utopia of Ownership
I was already deep into its writing when this book took a sharp left turn, or maybe a full 180: Neal Stephenson himself announced, 30 years after the publication of Snow Crash, that he was becoming an active participant in the creation of the Metaverse.
His new company was Lamina1. And as cofounder Peter Vessenes explained in a June 2022 announcement:
- [Lamina1 is] the base layer for the Open Metaverse: a place to build something a bit closer to Neal's vision—one that privileges creators, technical and artistic, one that provides support, spatial computing tech, and a community to support those who are building out the Metaverse.
In a keen irony, the Lamina1 announcement received less media attention than it might have at other times. By then, “the Metaverse” was garnering so much coverage, many people missed that the actual creator of the Metaverse was now also involved. Up to and including (as a subsequent premiere white paper announced), designing a virtual world himself:
- Under active early-stage development, Neal Stephenson's THEEE METAVERSE promises a richly-imagined interactive virtual world with an unforgettable origin story. Built on the Lamina1 chain, creators will come to experience Neal's vision and stay to develop their own.
