Summary

Through this chapter, we have gained a generic understanding of a typical filesystem, its fabric and design, and what makes it an elemental part of an operating system. This chapter also emphasizes the importance and elegance of abstraction, using the common, layered architecture design which the kernel comprehensively imbibes. We have also stretched our understanding of the VFS and its common file interface that facilitates the common file API and its internal structures. In the next chapter, we will shall explore another facet of memory management called a virtual memory manager that deals with process virtual address spaces and page tables.
