Three Helpings of Pi
The number π (pi) represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference (the distance all the way around the circle’s “rim”) to its diameter (the straight line distance from one side of the circle through its center to the other side). Remarkably, the value of this ratio is the same no matter what size the circle is. Other properties of a circle, like its area, depend on its size, but not π; as the size of the circle increases, the ratio of the increasing circumference to the increasing diameter remains constant.
