Chapter 13: Computer chips
Abstract
Computer chips, or integrated circuits or microchips, are the brains of many electronic devices, from smartphones to complex computer systems. These miniature electronic circuits, typically fabricated from semiconductor materials such as silicon, contain millions to billions of information-processing transistors. As technological demands have increased, so has the desire to reduce chip size while increasing computational capacity, resulting in developments such as multicore processors and quantum circuits. This chapter examines the evolution, operation, and prospects of computer chips, highlighting their central role in the digital revolution and the challenges and opportunities for chip design and manufacturing. ...
