CHAPTER 17Artificial Intelligence and the M&A Process
As of the writing of the second edition in July 2025, I would consider the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in M&A still in “early days,” but there are some interesting applications that can help shorten cycles, save time, and in some cases produce better results. This chapter provides a high-level overview of some AI application areas in use today.
While the previous chapters in this book include proven integration and communication practices that can be applied today, this chapter on AI and M&A is more directional and included to inform the further exploration by the reader. If you’re not curious about how AI can improve M&A results, you should be.
Embracing AI across the M&A life cycle is essential and no longer optional. But while the impact of AI on M&A is substantial, human expertise remains crucial for interpreting results and making strategic decisions.
I think AI’s impact right now (remember it’s 2025) is focused on shortening cycles, completing better and more robust analyses, and saving time. I have not heard many examples (yet) of AI replacing people in the processes outlined in the next few pages. However, I think that day will come sooner than people think.
Here’s a high-level overview of where and how AI is positively impacting the entire M&A process.
