CHAPTER 15

ADVANCED EM-BASED DESIGN TECHNIQUES FOR MICROWAVE FILTERS

A number of Software packages are now commercially available for the electromagnetic (EM) Simulation of microwave circuits. These EM Simulation Software tools provide very accurate results, allowing microwave filter designers to innovate and practice on various filter configurations in a very cost-effective approach without the need to build and test the hardware. However, commercial EM Software packages are classified as “Simulation tools” and not as “design tools.” Although they may help users to check the validity of their designs, they cannot be used directly to come up with the design itself. Filter designers must employ other tools and techniques, together with the EM Simulator, to carry out the design process. Several EM-based techniques are available for the design of microwave filters; these techniques are divided into three categories:

  • EM-based synthesis techniques (EM simulator + circuit models)
  • EM-based optimization techniques (EM simulator + optimization tools)
  • EM-based advanced design techniques (EM simulator + circuit models + optimization tools)

Chapter 14 addresses the first category of EM-based synthesis techniques. In this chapter (Chapter 15) we address the other two categories with a focus on the third category of EM-based advanced design techniques.

15.1 EM-BASED SYNTHESIS TECHNIQUES

Chapter 14 is dedicated to description of the category of EM-based synthesis design techniques. Three examples ...
