Mindfulness: Living Through Challenges and Enriching Your Life In This Moment
by Richard W. Sears
Afterword
So, you have finished this book, exploring the various aspects of mindfulness and the challenges and opportunities of integrating it into your daily life. At the end of a Zen retreat, it would be traditional to ask a very simple question, which I will ask you now:
What have you attained?
If you were to tell me something you remembered about what you read, you would be falling into the past. If you tell me what you're going to do with this information, you're jumping into the future. What are you experiencing in this moment? What do you see, hear, feel, smell, and taste, right now? The past and the future only truly exist as memories and thoughts. What else could you possibly attain, outside of this very moment you are in?
I am looking outside my window at the morning sun shining through the leaves of the autumn trees, listening to my cat purring, and feeling honored to share these words with you.
