Packet Handling

The first principle is that you must not fool yourself - and you are the easiest person to fool.    –Richard Feynman

Mobile IPv6 specifies several mechanisms that have to be used to send and receive IPv6 packets to and from mobile devices. These mechanisms can best be understood as various forms of encapsulation, which are tailored to be minimally intrusive. In all cases, the IPv6 addresses visible to the routing infrastructure are required to be topologically correct using source and destination addresses that belong to the appropriate subnets from which the communicating IPv6 nodes are accessible. The signaling considered in the previous chapters has the purpose of informing the other nodes about the mobile node’s topologically correct address (i.e., its care-of address). The techniques and protocols in this chapter utilize the address information which has been previously (securely!) provided by the mobile node to its home agent and its correspondent nodes.

There are several kinds of encapsulation specified in the base Mobile IPv6 document:

• IPv6-within-IPv6 encapsulation [1]. This is used by the home agent to deliver packets to the mobile node if the packets have arrived at the mobile node’s home network. This is also used by the mobile node to send packets to a correspondent by means of its home network.

Routing Header Type 2 [2]. This is used by a ...
