CHAPTER 15The Future of Data Sanitization

As data as well as security and privacy concerns grow exponentially, so does the need for effective data sanitization. The future of data sanitization will follow the path of data management, which evolved to address storage arrays, data warehouses, and today's data lakes. Platforms will be devised in conjunction with data discovery tools to safely overwrite data wherever it resides whenever it meets the criteria of a policy to do so. Cryptographic erasure will play an increasing role as data security and strong encryption are applied more broadly. As the number and variety of digital devices grows, so will the need for overwriting or physically destroying them before recycling.

Crafting an information lifecycle management program should take into account future technology that will change the way data is created, stored, and disposed of.

Storage media has undergone a consistent path to denser and denser storage. Cloud data storage requirements are growing exponentially. Technology vendors will develop tools for erasing data from these new devices. The hope is that the technologists devising new storage methods will take into account data sanitization ...
